Garage Cleanout in Spring, TX

The garage goes first because everything else in a cleanout passes through it. Clear it, and the attic has somewhere to come down to, the backyard has a path to the driveway, and the truck has a place to back up to.

What is in there

What Usually Comes Out of a Spring Garage

In a north Harris County garage the mix is fairly predictable: shelving loaded with bins, a second refrigerator or chest freezer, lawn equipment that stopped starting two summers ago, bikes, a treadmill, leftover flooring or tile from a remodel, and boxes from the last move still taped shut.

Heat matters here. A closed garage in a Spring August runs hot all afternoon, and cardboard that has sat through a few summers tends to split when it is picked up. Many crews prefer to start early in the day and to use their own bags or bins for anything that has gone soft.

  • Shelving units, workbenches and old cabinets
  • Second refrigerators and freezers (see the appliance page)
  • Mowers, edgers, grills, bikes and exercise machines
  • Remodel leftovers: tile, trim, a spare toilet
  • Boxes, bins and whatever is inside them

How a Garage Clear Tends to Run

  1. 1

    Decide what stays

Mark the keep items before the crew arrives. Painter's tape or a spot on the lawn works; the crew needs something they can see.

  2. 2

    Pull everything to the driveway

Crews work faster from the outside in. The driveway becomes the sorting floor for the rest of the cleanout.

  3. 3

    Load the heavy pieces first

Freezers, workbenches and machines go on the truck while there is still room to maneuver around them.

  4. 4

    Sweep and look up

Once the floor is clear, the pull-down attic ladder usually has room to open. That is stop two.

Hazardous leftovers

What Does Not Go on the Truck

Paint, pool chemicals, automotive fluids, aerosols, batteries and small propane cylinders are household hazardous waste. Harris County runs a household hazardous waste facility at 6900 Hahl Road for residents who live outside the City of Houston, which covers unincorporated Spring. It is open by appointment only, and the county does not charge for drop-off.

The same facility takes up to four tires per household each month. It does not take electronics, appliances, furniture or household trash, which is the part a hauler can carry.

Garage FAQ

Questions About Garage Jobs

Does the whole garage have to be emptied in one visit?

No. Plenty of garage jobs are a partial clear: the back wall of shelving, the corner where the old treadmill lives, the boxes nobody has opened since the move. Say which part on the call so the quote covers that part.

What about half-full paint cans and pool chemicals?

Hauling crews generally leave household chemicals behind, because they belong at a household hazardous waste site rather than in a load. Unincorporated Harris County residents can book a free appointment at the county facility on Hahl Road; the page below has the details.

Can the car go back in the same day?

That depends on how much is left once the crew is done and on what you decided to keep. Ask the contractor how long the job should take when they quote it.

Start With the Garage

Call and say roughly how full it is, what the heavy items are and whether anything needs to stay. The request goes to one independent hauling contractor in the Spring area, who quotes the load.
